We need YOU on School Council!

Did you know that this past year the council at CVES ran the following?

  • Hot Lunch Program
  • Milk Program
  • Fun Night, Movie Nights, Christmas Shopping Day, Popcorn days
  • Spent $15,000 on new library furniture to revitalize our space for better use by all students.
  • Funded $10,000 in Ad-hoc requests (requests made by parents or teachers for funds for use in the school and classrooms such as: Blues in the School, outdoor recess equipment, Butterfly larvae kits,Guest author Eric Wilson visit, Intermediate Paint day, Talent fest,Career Day).
  • Screening of the movie “Screenagers” and MindMasters presentation.

We are in need of new executive members for the 2017-18 school year. Without an executive body, these events and activities ARE NOT POSSIBLE and will not continue.
That’s right. If the positions are not filled by new members, the Castor Valley School Council will cease to exist.

The following positions will need to be filled:

  • Chair/Co-Chair and/or Vice-Chair
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer

CVES COUNCIL
Executive Roles and Responsibilities

  • Chair and Vice-Chair (s) or Co-Chairs and Vice-Chair (any combination works!)
    Responsible for:

    • Keeps council members up to date on relevant events & initiatives
    • Council reporting to the OCDSB
    • Works with Treasurers to track spending
    • Liaising with Principal and other school staff
    • Meetings (agendas preparation and distribution, minute distribution, attendance, follow up)
    • Membership & Constitution
    • Email database
    • School-Wide emails
    • Liaising with OCDSB and other external groups/organizations
    • Providing Principal with information for any CVESC news on weekly school emails
    • Creating and updating other social media outlets (facebook, twitter, pinterest etc)
    •  Website updates
    • Attending ad-hoc meeting
    • Attending and chairing council meetings
    • Application and reporting for PRO Grant
    • Help promote council involvement to new and current families
    • Oversee coordinator positions/working groups (Environment/ Inclusive Safe and Caring Schools, Fundraising, Events (Fun Night, Christmas Shopping day etc), Community Liaison, Library Renewal
    • Coordinate Volunteers for all council initiatives (it is STONGLY recommended that council form a committee for this role or it be a shared position and not the sole responsibility of the Chair/Co-Chairs.).
  • Co-Treasurer (shared position. Only responsibilities for open position are listed)
    Responsible for:

    • Sets budget for following year
    • Tracks spending and cash flow, and ensures alignment with budget and provides monthly reports at Council meetings
    • Organizes Ad Hoc requests and coordinates the Ad Hoc Budget meeting and tracks requests and usages of Ad Hoc budget monies
  • Co-Secretary (shared position. One position is open).
    Responsible for:

    • Attends at least half of the council meetings in coordination with the other co-secretary.
    • Gathers reports before meeting
    • Records meeting minutes
    • Completes minutes and sends to Chair for review
    • Ensures meeting minutes and financial reports are stored in a safe place and backed up
    • Keeping track of Council membership
    • Keeping track of Council meeting attendance

Fun Night 2017

The countdown is on! We are one month away from Fun Night! We are welcoming back some old favourite games and activities and are pleased to be offering new features including a show by Junkyard Symphony,  Glow-in-the-dark painting and face painting by GlowSport and KinderKorner- an area designated for our younger ones. We are also hoping to have a mini “touch a truck”- details to come.

Parent Volunteers

We are still in need of volunteers for Fun Night. We cannot stress enough that this event is NOT possible without many helping hands. Please take a look at the google sheet and add your first and last name if you are able to volunteer in one of the open spots.
 All spots must be filled if we are to proceed with the event! 

CVES Student Volunteers

As usual, we will be asking student volunteers in grades 5-8 to sign up to run the games on fun night. Every student that stays after school is required to submit a permission form signed by a parent. If your child registers to volunteer at the event, we kindly ask you to return the permission slip to school as soon as possible. Sign up will take place on Wednesday May 17th.  The permission slip can also be filled out online  at https://castorvalley.ca/funnight2017/.

Bake Sale and Cake Walk

Do you love to bake? We are in need of baked goods for our bake sake at fun night. Items should be nut-free and individually wrapped. For more information and to donate please contact Karen Warren.

The Cake walk is a very popular activity at fun night. If you have never participated in a cake walk-it’s sort of like musical chairs where the winner gets to go home with an entire cake! February Fun

This is your School Council!

We have a great community of students, teachers, staff, parents, volunteers here at Castor Valley. Everyone works together to make the school as great as it can be. School Council meets nearly every month to discuss how we can support the best learning environment for our kids. Whether that means purchasing items the school needs, organizing events to raise necessary funds, or to supplement learning with guest visits and parent workshops. We are always working for you!

We’ve finished the 2016 part of the 2016-17 year! Hard to believe! I’d like to quickly mention a few of the great things we’ve done so far this year.

  • Opened our new KinderYard!!!
  • Launch of our Library Project. We’ve received many book donations, raised $375 so far from our Indigo Fundscrip program, compiled results from our survey, and are busy planning how to best reconfigure our library space.
  • Granted a number of Ad Hoc requests (including items like reusable paint supplies needed for the Intermediate Painting Day and visit from Author Eric Wilson)
  • Had a Halloween Movie Night (a winter movie night is coming up soon!)
  • Hosted a guest visit by renowned mystery writer, Eric Wilson! Eric Wilson at Castor Valley | CVESC16111671_10157998012150024_1862628966_n
  • Participated in local events like Remembrance Day ceremonies and the Metcalfe Christmas Parade.parade2016

FUNtastic! Thanks Everyone!

CVES Council would like to thank all the families who came out to our Family Fun Night on June 14th. The evening was a huge success, raising just over $6,500!! We were also SO fortunate to have 4 Osgoode Scotiabank employees help us out that evening as a part of their Employee Volunteer Program (the program matches our profit up to $1,000 per Scotiabank employee) and they are donating another $4,000, making our total profit over $10,000! This money will be used to help fund our new Kinder Play Structure, and ensures Council will be starting off the next school year in an excellent financial position – ready to fund student, teacher and parent initiatives throughout the year!

CVES Council would like to thank everyone involved – the students who ran games and wore the beaver costume, the high school students who came to help, the teachers and staff who helped out, all the parents who donated cakes and baked goods, and the amazing people who put in MANY planning hours and who volunteered their time on the 14th. All in all there were over 40 adult volunteers and about 35 student volunteers – it’s truly a school-wide effort!We were also lucky to have generous sponsors this year! A HUGE shout out goes to:

  • Greely Firefighters (for their BBQ expertise)
  • Triangle pump (donated all the pizza)

Mark Your Calendars for Talentfest!

We are looking for students to show off their creative talents whether it’s singing, dancing, playing an instrument, or something different like juggling, comedy, yoga, hula-hooping or something else. Any students interested in participating either as a performer or MC, a member of the stage crew, advertising, decorating or front-of-house committees should pick up a registration form from the office. Registration forms are available now and must be signed and returned to the office by Tuesday, February 9th.

Auditions will be February 23rd and 24th after school and we will have a dress rehearsal on Tuesday, April 12th after school and two evening shows – Wednesday, April 13th and Thursday, April 14th.

We would also love to have more parent volunteers as there are many jobs to be done! To volunteer or if you have any questions, please email jdanbymcdonald@gmail.com. It’s Show Time! Get ready to shine!

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day | Melanie Ritchie

Tomorrow is Remembrance Day. The school will be holding a Service in the Gymnasium. Parents and family are more than welcome to attend. Please let the office know in advance so enough seating can be arranged. Please be there no later than 10:30am.

If your child is a Beaver, Cub, Scout, Spark, Brownie, Guide, or Cadet please have them wear their uniform to the service.

What else is going on at the school?

  • The Student Ambassadors are hosting a snowsuit drive. So please send in your clean and gently used snowsuits to the school this week.
  • FUNDSCRIP: a new order form was sent home this week. The deadline will be Thursday, November 19th.
  • NEXT COUNCIL MEETING: Join us in the school library this Thursday, Nov. 12th at 6:30pm. Bring  a mug as we will be serving hot chocolate! We will also be approving Ad Hoc requests during the meeting.
